Chocolate banana smoothie in glass topped with chocolate curls and flax seeds.

Chocolate Banana Smoothie

The taste of this chocolate banana smoothie reminds me of a fudgy, chocolatey brownie. It’s in the realm of the dessert smoothie category, especially if you add some delicious, chocolate curls on top.

Equipment

  • 1 blender

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons flax seeds - brown or golden
  • 1 ½ cups bananas - sliced and frozen
  • 1 teaspoon agave nectar - or liquid honey - optional
  • optional toppings: flax seeds and chocolate curls

Instructions

  • Add all of the ingredients to a blender jar.
  • Blend on high speed until smooth. You can adjust the thickness to your liking with the almond milk.
  • Transfer to a glass. Garnish with more flax seeds and some chocolate curls, if desired. Serve!

Notes

  • You can use brown or golden flax seeds. The golden seeds are a tad sweeter in flavor but the brown ones contain more antioxidants. Besides, you might enjoy the bolder flavor.
  • You can use liquid honey instead, but keep in mind that it won’t be vegan anymore if you do. This is optional and you might find it sweet enough without it. So, before adding the sweetener, give it a taste test.
  • I recommend that chocolate banana smoothies be consumed immediately because the ingredients start to degrade, separate and become unappetizing. Try to consume your smoothie within 1 day at the latest.
