Date Smoothie

Sharing is caring!

This date smoothie is delightfully sweet and creamy. The dates, which are fruits that come from the date palm tree, add thickness and natural, caramel-like sweetness to the smoothie. They are blended with almond milk, yogurt and crushed ice as well as some more amazing-tasting ingredients. This breakfast treat is ready in as little as 5 minutes.

How Does it Taste?

The taste of dates can be described as a blend of honey, caramel, and brown sugar with a hint of butterscotch. The sweetness is intense, but it also carries subtle undertones of molasses and a slight nuttiness. The other ingredients in this smoothie balance out that sweetness so that your taste buds don’t get a sugar overload.

I would consider it to be a dessert smoothie because of its sweet, indulgent flavor like my chocolate and banana smoothie and chocolaty zucchini smoothie.

Ingredients

Date smoothie ingredients prepped on brown background.
  • dates – The texture of dates is another aspect of their appeal. Be sure to use fresh medjool dates (my favorite) as they are soft and chewy. They are tender and have a slight stickiness. If you don’t over-blend, you will get little bits of this texture in your smoothie–which I personally love.
  • vanilla almond milk – Make sure you get the unsweetened kind or the smoothie will taste too sweet.
  • almond butter – Almond and other nut butters are a popular addition to smoothies because they taste nutty, add thickness and creaminess, energy and nutrients. I like to use a full ¼ cup in my smoothie but that does add a lot of calories so feel free to use less if that’s a concern.
  • Greek yogurt – I love the thickness and tang the Greek yogurt provides the smoothie with. You can choose light or full fat and it will still taste great.

Recipe FAQs

How many dates should I add to my smoothie?

This is going to be down to taste preference and sweetness of the other ingredients in the smoothie but I like to use 8 dates in a large smoothie. You can start with less and add more to taste.

Is it OK to blend dates?

Absolutely! I like to blend medjool dates into my smoothies for their soft, chewy texture and caramel flavor. If your dates are dry, you can try soaking them in warm water for about 30 minutes prior to blending to make them easier to blend.
