Acai Smoothie

Sharing is caring!

Acai berries are small, dark purple fruits native to the rainforests of South America. While you won’t find them fresh here in North America, you can buy them frozen or in powder form. In this acai smoothie, I use the acai powder because it is readily available and tastes and looks great in smoothies.

Fresh acai berries are one of the only fruits to be considered naturally sugar-free! They are immediately frozen after picking to prevent them from going rancid. This is why you will only see them in the freezer section of the grocery store here. To remedy this, I use acai powder in this smoothie instead.

Some more colorful smoothies you might like are my blackberry smoothie and fruit smoothie bowl.

  • vanilla almond milk (the sweetened kind) – I find that when you don’t add bananas to smoothies, you need some other form of sweetness and vanilla almond milk does the trick here.
  • acai powder – Adds rich flavor and deep color to smoothies.
  • frozen strawberries and pineapple chunks – To cut down on prep and freezing time, I simply buy them in bags from the freezer section of the supermarket.

Recipe FAQs

What is acai powder?

Acai powder is a concentrated form of the acai berry, a fruit that grows on the acai palm tree in the Amazon rainforest.

The process of making this powder usually involves freeze-drying the acai berries and then grinding them into a fine powder. This method helps preserve the nutritional content of the berries and extends their shelf life. It still retains much of the vibrant purple color and the characteristic flavor of fresh acai berries.

Do you refrigerate acai powder?

It is recommended to refrigerate acai powder to keep it fresh.
