Green Apple Smoothie

Sharing is caring!

This simple but delicious green apple smoothie is combined with apple juice, bananas and fresh ginger. It has a really nice, sweet and sour flavor profile from the green apples and bananas and a hint of spice from the ginger.

Unlike plain apple juice, which has the fiber removed, blending a whole apple in a smoothie gives you the benefits of the whole fruit (skin, pulp and all) plus that same delicious flavor.

It offers a little more sustenance than a glass of juice, keeping you satisfied for longer.

  • apple juice - 100% no sugar added.
  • fresh ginger - Ginger is optional--not everyone likes the spicy flavor.
  • green apple slices - I like to leave the skin on; it contains half of the apple's fiber and many polyphenols. Besides Granny Smith, you could also try Green Dragon, Shamrock, Lodi, Mutsu or other green apple varieties.
  • cinnamon powder - (Not pictured.) Apples and cinnamon are a classic combination but this is optional.

❄️ How To Freeze the Apple Slices

If you can’t find frozen apple slices and want to freeze your own, it’s easy. All you have to do is:

  1. Clean, core and slice some fresh green apples with the skin on.
  2. Place them spaced apart on a baking sheet.
  3. Transfer to the freezer until solid.
  4. Use them in this smoothie immediately or transfer to a freezer bag and back into the freezer for later.

  3. Transfer to a glass and serve! Sprinkle with cinnamon powder if desired.

✅ Joss' Tip

I like to slice extra apples, portion them out into 1 or 1 ½ cup servings and store in the freezer for smoothies when the mood strikes. Just label the bag with the amount of apples so you know how much you’re grabbing without having to measure later.

❓ Recipe FAQs

What is the best way to prep the apple for blending?

If you're going to blend an apple for a smoothie, I recommend coring it and slicing it first or chopping it into smaller pieces, to make the job of the blender easier. I leave the peel on but you can remove it if you like.

What are the best apples to use?

It depends on if you like a more sweet or tart flavor in your smoothies. I like using Granny Smith green apples for their sour flavor but if you like your smoothie more on the sweet side, use Green Dragon or Mutsu. McIntosh are somewhere in the middle, with a mix of green and red color.

How long can you keep an apple smoothie in the fridge?

I would recommend keeping your apple smoothie in the fridge for no more than 24 hours. Any longer and it tends to become unappetizing in taste and texture.
